Update from the SFACF Board

July 23, 2010
For over twenty years the Louisville Cruising Club has in conjunction with the Leukemia & Lymphoma society put on a fall Leukemia Cup regatta known locally as the Fleur de Lis Regatta.

The event has always been strongly supported and one of the highlights of our sailing season. Last fall the idea was put forth to reenergize this event for the sailing community and enhance our commitment to fund raising for this great cause. Several club members embraced this idea and after exploring concepts with the L&L Society formed The Sailing for a Cure Foundation. The Foundation will allow us to build a first class event that will raise considerable funds for the L&L Society while raising the profile of our sailing community and having the kind of fun on and off the water that we all enjoy.

The Foundation's board is made up of club members Steve Lennon, Ernest Dreher, Dale Allison and Paul Resch from the L&L Society. A special thank you goes out to Ben Fussenegger, Joe Argabright III, Scott Stout, Mike Parrino, Al Wolczyk, Mickey Gregg, David McAlister and all those who we might have missed that have helped year after year in so many ways.

This year’s fund raising will be built around teams made up by adding a ceremonial “First Mate” to each racing boats crew as a way of personalizing this fight and keeping the focus on helping those who have or will suffer from these terrible diseases. “First Mates” are either survivors or patients currently involved in the fight and while they will not be aboard for the racing they will be doing all they can to raise donations and aid in team morale.

Each team will be encouraged to raise as much as possible as all of their donations will be credited to that team and will go to determining the fund raising awards to be presented at the awards ceremony on Sunday afternoon. We hope that each team will reach out beyond their crew and enlist donations from all friends, relatives, coworkers and employers who can donate in support of that team by either going to our web site www.sailingforacure.org or by simply giving the SV’s captain a check made out to the Sailing for a Cure Foundation and placing the boat name in the memo. Each Racing team will receive a regatta burgee with the SV and First Mates names on them to be flown in the weeks leading up to and during the regatta.

This year’s Fleur de Lis Regatta will be held at the waterfront marina next to the Great Lawn on September 10th 11th & 12th and will be FREE. That’s right, there will be no registration fee, all meals will be paid for individually and our hope is that each team will raise a significant donation for its participation. The Regatta will again consist of 2 days of spirited racing, fun and food. New this year will be the “First Mates” party on Friday night for the racing crews, First Mates, families and sponsors. It will include music, a dinner, beverages, fun activities and a brief program. Saturday nights party the “Sunset Sail-a-bration” will be a family friendly event with dinner, fun activities a silent auction and a live band with dancing. Sunday will conclude the racing and awards will be distributed for both racing and fund raising.

This new highly visible venue allows greater community access to the boat’s, has an adjacent playground for kids and will encourage picnicking and participation by the general public.  So mark your calendar, build your crew and register with Phil Bills today to be a part of this fantastic event.
